Required Scales
- • 12 major scales (all keys, ascending and descending)
- • Three harmonic minor scales (a, e, b minor)
- • Chromatic scale (full range, sixteenth notes)
- • All scales at quarter note = 88 BPM minimum
Scoring Breakdown
Scales: 20% • Lyrical Etude: 35% • Technical Etude: 35% • Sight-Reading: 10%
AzMEA publishes complete scale requirements on their website. Contact your band director for your assigned scales and any specific articulation or tempo guidelines.
Etude & Solo Requirements
You must perform two contrasting etudes selected from the AzMEA approved etude list. Both etudes are required at regional and All-State auditions.
Lyrical Etude
A musical, expressive etude that showcases tone quality, dynamic control, and phrasing. Counts for 35% of total score.
Technical Etude
A challenging etude requiring fast articulation, range extension, and technical facility. Counts for 35% of total score.
Sight-Reading
You'll sight-read a short piece provided at audition time. Counts for 10% of total score. Prepare by reading new material 2-3 times weekly.
In-Person Audition Format
Arizona uses live in-person auditions at both regional and All-State levels. You'll perform in a dedicated audition room with a panel of three or four judges.
Audition Setup
You'll audition alone in a separate room. Judges sit with scoring sheets. Metronome is permitted for scales only—not for etudes or sight-reading.
Performance Order
Perform in sequence: 12 major scales, 3 harmonic minors, chromatic, lyrical etude, technical etude, sight-reading. Total audition time: 10-12 minutes.
Judge Interaction
Judges will instruct you to move to the next section. Stay calm and focused. Your composure is part of what judges assess.
Materials to Bring
Bring your etude music, scale sheet, metronome, pencil, and water bottle. Arrive 30 minutes early to acclimate to the audition site.
Preparation Timeline (3–4 Months)
Begin in July to master fundamentals before regional auditions in October–November.
July 2025
Get your etude list from your band director. Choose your two etudes. Begin slow, deliberate practice on both. Focus on musicality and tone.
August 2025
Master both etudes structurally. Play through scales daily at audition tempo. Record yourself weekly to assess progress. Isolate problem passages in etudes.
September 2025
Run full scales and etudes daily without stopping. Begin sight-reading practice with method books. Do mock auditions once weekly with your director.
October-November 2025
Final refinement for regional auditions. Run multiple mock auditions. Record yourself in audition order. Attend your regional audition.
December 2025 – January 2026
If advancing, refine areas identified by judges. Continue daily practice. Study the All-State audition site logistics. Mentally prepare for All-State.
Practice Tips for AzMEA Success
- →Practice scales every single day — No exceptions. Scales are 20% of your score and they require daily maintenance
- →Use a random scale order in practice — Don't always play C, F, Bb... in the same order. This prevents muscle memory from covering up intonation issues
- →Time your scale run — Can you play all 12 majors + 3 minors + chromatic in 4-5 minutes? That's audition pace. If not, you need to get faster
- →Spend 60% of etude practice on measures you hate — Don't play all-the-way-through repeatedly. Isolate the hard parts and spend the majority of your time there
- →Record full audition sequences — Once a week, record yourself playing scales → lyrical → technical → sight-read, without stopping in between
- →Sight-read from library books, not old audition materials — Don't memorize sight-reading examples. Use your band method books or download new music weekly
- →Build endurance by extending your practice sessions — If your audition is 12 minutes, do 20-minute nonstop practice blocks at least twice weekly
- →Listen back critically — Don't just record to have a record. Listen to every recording and identify three specific things to improve next practice
