All-State Band Audition Guide
Prepare for California All-State band auditions — Digital submission deadline: October 15, 2025
Eligibility Requirements
To audition for California CBDA All-State Band, you must meet all of the following:
- ✓Be a high school student (grades 9-12) enrolled in a California school
- ✓Be a member of your school's band or wind ensemble
- ✓Have your band director register you in the CBDA audition system
- ✓Be a California resident or attend school in California
- ✓Your school must be in good standing with CBDA
Scale Requirements
Scales are a critical component of the California All-State audition, counting for 30% of your score. All students perform the same scale requirements regardless of instrument.
Required Scales
- • Six major scales (specific keys assigned by your region)
- • Chromatic scale up and down
- • All scales at prescribed tempo and articulation
- • Must perform at both first and second round auditions
Scoring Breakdown
Scales: 30% • Etudes: 50% (25% each for lyrical & technical) • Sight-Reading: 20%
