Audition Materials
ISSMA All-State uses specific etude books that rotate annually. One lyrical and one technical etude are selected each year from the prescribed books. All etude books are reused every year, so you can study them in advance.
Etude Books
The same etude books are used every year for each instrument. This allows students to prepare in advance knowing the exact etudes they'll select from. Purchase your specific instrument's etude book from your band director.
Audition Recording Format
Auditions are recorded live by a proctor at one of nine audition sites. Recordings are then reviewed in a blind format by the selection committee, based solely on the recording quality. Previous participation is not considered.
Audition Requirements
You'll perform one lyrical etude, one technical etude, and scales as assigned for your instrument. Scales are performed from memory. Contact your band director for specific scale requirements.
Visit the ISSMA website for audition locations, etude books, and complete requirements. Contact your band director for etude book information and your audition site location.
Scale & Audition Requirements
Scales are a critical part of the ISSMA audition. All scales must be performed from memory at audition tempo. Your band director will provide your specific instrument's scale requirements.
Lyrical Etude
One lyrical etude from the prescribed book is selected annually. Focuses on tone quality, musicality, and phrasing.
Technical Etude
One technical etude from the prescribed book is selected annually. Tests agility, accuracy, and technical facility.
Scales
Scales must be performed from memory at audition tempo. Precision, consistent tone, and clear articulation are essential.
Preparation Timeline (Starting Now)
ISSMA All-State preparation happens over several months. Here's how to structure your preparation:
Now - December 2025
Get your etude book from your band director. Study the entire book to familiarize yourself with all etudes. Build strong fundamentals in scales and tone quality.
December 2025 - January 11, 2026
Intensive preparation for auditions. Practice etudes daily, isolating difficult passages. Master scales from memory. Record yourself weekly to monitor progress.
Late December 2025
Confirm your availability for the entire All-State Festival weekend (March 13-15, 2026) with your band director. If not available, you cannot audition.
January 11, 2026

All-State Festival weekend. Attend rehearsals with world-class clinicians and perform in the All-State concert.
Practice Tips for ISSMA Success
- →Get your etude book early and study all etudes — you won't know which ones are selected until the audition
- →Practice scales from memory until they're automatic — you can't use sheet music during the audition
- →Isolate difficult passages in etudes — practice the 30 seconds before and after a hard spot for 5 minutes at a time
- →Record yourself weekly — playback reveals intonation and rhythm issues you might miss during practice
- →Practice scales in random order from memory — this builds true mastery, not just muscle memory
- →Warm up with long tones, then move to scales, then etudes — save your fresh embouchure for the most important material
- →Master your weaker etude first when mentally fresh — end practice with your stronger etude for confidence
- →Get adequate sleep the week of your audition — tone production and mental clarity depend on rest
- →Confirm festival availability early — you must be available March 13-15 or you cannot audition
