Audition Materials

1st Round - District Auditions
District auditions are held throughout October in each of the nine LMEA districts. Your band director will register you in your school's assigned district. Check with your director for specific dates and locations.
2nd Round - All-State Auditions
Students who score high enough on the 1st round audition are eligible to participate in the 2nd round. Registration deadline for 2nd round is October 11, 2025.
Audition Requirements
Contact your band director for specific etude and scale requirements. Audition materials vary by instrument and are distributed through district directors.
Visit the LMEA All-State Band page for complete information. Contact your band director for specific audition materials and your district's audition dates.
Scale & Audition Requirements
Each LMEA district may have slightly different scale and etude requirements. Contact your band director for your specific instrument's requirements and the audition materials you'll need to prepare.
Prescribed Etudes
Each instrument has specific etudes assigned for the audition. These are released by your district director and demonstrate technique and musicality.
Scales
Scales are performed as assigned by your instrument. Practice scales at audition tempo with clear articulation and consistent tone.
Sight-Reading
You'll sight-read prepared excerpts during the audition. Practice reading new material regularly to stay sharp.
Preparation Timeline (Starting Now)

Practice Tips for LMEA Success
- →Get your audition materials early from your band director and start preparation immediately
- →Isolate difficult passages in etudes — practice the 30 seconds before and after a hard spot for 5 minutes at a time
- →Record yourself weekly — playback reveals intonation and rhythm issues you might miss during practice
- →Practice scales in random order — prevents muscle memory from masking real improvement
- →Warm up with long tones, not scales — save your fresh embouchure for the work
- →Master your worst etude first when mentally fresh — end practice with your best excerpt for confidence
- →Practice sight-reading regularly — grab new music and run through it to build confidence with new material
- →Get adequate sleep in the week of your district audition — tone production and mental clarity depend on rest
