Prepare for MMEA All-State band auditions — District auditions September-October 2025, State auditions December 2025
Eligibility Requirements
To audition for Missouri MMEA All-State, you must meet all of the following:
- ✓Be a student in grades 9-12 in a Missouri high school
- ✓Be a member of your school's band program
- ✓Have your band director submit your audition entry
- ✓Your school must be a member of the Missouri Music Education Association
- ✓Meet all academic eligibility requirements set by your school and the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA)
Audition Materials
MMEA All-State auditions feature prescribed scales, prepared band passages, and sight-reading. Materials are released in April for a long preparation window.
Scales
Major scales and chromatic scales prescribed by your region. Keys typically include 0-4 sharps and 0-4 flats. Consistency and tone quality are critical.
Band Passages
Excerpts from standard band literature assigned to your district. These assess musicality, intonation, and ability to blend with section sound.
Sight-Reading
One fresh excerpt given to you during the audition. Practice reading new material confidently without previous preparation time.

Scale & Audition Requirements
All students perform prescribed major and chromatic scales, assigned band passages, and sight-read in auditions.
Major Scales
Assigned scales through 4 sharps and 4 flats. Practice in random order daily. Accuracy and consistent tone matter more than speed.
Chromatic Scale
Full chromatic range of your instrument. Build slowly from low to high, focusing on intonation and note clarity.
Band Passages
District-assigned excerpts from band literature. Work the difficult intervals and entrances first; polish musicality last.
Preparation Timeline (Starting Now)
Missouri has one of the earliest audition timelines in the country. Start preparation in spring for September district auditions:
April-May 2025
Audition materials released. Download immediately. Begin learning assigned scales and band passages. Work fundamentals: long tones, chromatic exercises.
June-July 2025
Daily scale practice in random order. Isolate difficult intervals in band passages. Record yourself weekly. Begin mock auditions with your director.
August-September 2025
Final polish phase. Band passages should be secure and musical. Scales consistent at audition tempo. Practice sight-reading new excerpts 2-3 times per week.
September-October 2025
District auditions. Perform your assigned scales and band passages in your regional audition. Results determine advancement to state.
November-December 2025
If advancing to state, refine tone quality and musicality. Continue sight-reading practice. State auditions December 5-7.
January 9-11, 2026
All-State Clinic at University of Missouri. Perform in clinic rehearsals and final concert with the all-state band.
Practice Tips for MMEA Success
